Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. Memorial Day is about coming together to honor those who gave their all. Research notes Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, National Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
In 1915 Moina Michael wrote:
“We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.” The poppy has come to symbolize the remembrance of this day to us. http://www.usmemorialday.org/backgrnd.html
We take this time to thank those who have died so that we may be free.
