Hypothesis: If the nervous system of Daphnia is sensitive to the anticipated excitatory influence of caffeine exposure, then higher dosages of caffeine should result in faster heart rate.
Science Experiment Methodology abstract –
Dr Mark Schoenbeck:
“I am preparing an experiment that we use for our non-majors’ course, that introduces methodology. We will make predictions and observations on the physiological impact of a stimulant (caffeine) and a depressant (ethanol) on a physiological system (the water flea Daphnia). We will collect data on heart rate, and make a graph from the results.”
Science club members also presented samples of commonly existing organisms to inoculate petri plates and determine what bacteriological growth results.
