The National Center for Women & Information Technology NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing honors young women at the high-school level for their computing-related achievements and interests. By providing recognition for young women, the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing encourages their continued interest in computing; motivates the support of educational and corporate institutions for women’s increased participation; and provides a community of ongoing encouragement for young women so that they will persist in technology careers. Research shows that girls often lose interest in math and science at the grade school level, despite their aptitude in these fields, and that encouragement and mentoring can have a huge impact on the education and career decisions that girls make.
Educators such as teachers, technology specialists, counselors and more play a pivotal role in addressing the shortage of young women in computing.
In addition to identifying a pool of talented young women, the Aspirations Award also identifies outstanding educators who play a pivotal role in helping to encourage the young women to continue exploring their interest in computing and technology. The NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Educator Award recognizes educators for their efforts to promote gender equity in computing.
